The Open-Source Replacement Plan: $2 for a Beyond Compare Clone, $998 Left to Crowdfund the Next Target

Expensive software is dead: I'm letting AI start an 'affordable replacement plan' (Day 7 / 7)

Seven days ago, I set a goal: spend a $1000 budget to make free, open-source versions of paid software.

As it turned out, the first project cost only $2, leaving $998 in the budget.

Today I saw a comment from a netizen in the comment section, and it cracked me up:

Netizen comment: First take down competitors who are both bad and love charging money

So I just created a repository on GitHub and used the remaining $998 to launch the 'Open-Source Replacement Plan' - turning tools that cost hundreds for a one-time purchase or charge annual subscription fees into free open-source versions, one by one:

1. First work: a $2 replacement for a 500-yuan piece of software

Beyond Compare is handy, but the 500-yuan price is not cheap for individuals. The first software we shipped, OpenCompare, spent only $2 to turn the core features of folder comparison, code diff, and three-way merge into a free open-source replacement.

After the first version was released yesterday, some netizens reported that dragging in large folders would crash it. The AI turned the comments into tickets automatically, and three versions (v0.2.2 → v0.2.5) were shipped overnight to fix it:

2. It ran 900 million tokens - why did it only cost $2?

Over seven days, nearly 900 million tokens were consumed. Converted at my OpenCode subscription rate, the actual total cost was only about $2:

The secret is a three-tier model split: Gemini 4 handles only top-level decisions, DeepSeek 4.1 Flash takes on 90% of the code writing and bug fixing, the free local Qwen3.8-Flash-Next runs high-frequency checks, and a 93%+ cache hit rate puts every cent where it counts.

3. Who is next: $998 remaining, you decide by voting

OpenCompare has entered fully automatic maintenance. Which expensive software gets turned into a free open-source version next depends entirely on everyone's votes:

The one with the most votes gets built first by AI (and if many get high votes, several tracks open at once).

You're welcome to go to GitHub Issues and click 👍 on the first comment to vote, or directly nominate in the comments any software you think is too expensive and not worth renewing!
