OpenAI Cuts Off Cursor After SpaceX Acquisition

Of course, strictly speaking, the "ban" here does not mean Cursor will become unusable, but rather that OpenAI is preparing to terminate its model supply partnership with Cursor.

Today I saw a statement that OpenAI is going to terminate its cooperation with Cursor.

So I looked into it and found that OpenAI published "Regarding Our Decision After Cursor Was Acquired by SpaceX" on August 28.

Its core decision is:

OpenAI will gradually terminate the contract to supply OpenAI models to Cursor, with the direct supply planned to stop on November 12, 2026.

Why the sudden falling-out?

The core reason is that Elon Musk's SpaceX acquired Cursor.

Cursor officially announced this on August 14.

So OpenAI was quite blunt in proposing the termination. It directly stated:

It cannot be assured that SpaceX will use its technology within the bounds of OpenAI's terms of service.

What is the impact on Cursor users?

It does not mean that OpenAI will absolutely be unusable within Cursor after November 12. For example, users connecting their own OpenAI API key could theoretically still continue using it.

What is truly directly affected is the existing model supply partnership between Cursor and OpenAI. As for whether OpenAI models can still be directly selected in Cursor's Models menu in the future, there is no final conclusion yet.

Yutou also noticed a phenomenon: in fact, the official OpenAI Codex plugin has long been unusable inside Cursor, and the same goes for the official Claude plugin.

Cursor's response

As of the time of writing, Cursor has not yet issued a formal official response statement.

However, Cursor co-founder Michael Truell has already responded to Reuters. He expressed hope that this matter can be resolved with OpenAI and emphasized that the two sides have had a long-standing cooperative relationship. In other words, Cursor's current official stance is to hope for negotiations, not to announce abandoning OpenAI.

Actually, a few months ago, Yutou's main development tool had already switched from Cursor to Codex.

Cursor is only used in auto mode for some auxiliary work.

So whatever the final outcome, the impact on Yutou is not very significant.

But regardless, both Cursor and OpenAI are very important forces in the field of Vibe Coding, and I hope there will be an ending that makes everyone happy.
