Zhiyuan Robotics Reshuffles Partner Ranks as Chief Scientist Drops Off the List

Recently, the Zhiyuan Robotics company founded by Zhihuijun has undergone a major change in its senior executive personnel list, sparking considerable attention and discussion in the industry.

Let's first look at the specifics of this adjustment.

This time, Zhiyuan has fully disclosed a new 9-person core partner team, including:

Deng Taihua, Peng Zhihui, Jiang Qingsong, Yao Maoqing, Xiong Yan, Wang Chuang, Zhu Jie, Zhang Xiuzheng, and Niu Jia.

Compared to this old partner list, the new team has very obvious personnel changes, adding three people: Xiong Yan, Zhu Jie, and Zhang Xiuzheng.

At the same time, the ranks of Jiang Qingsong and Yao Maoqing have also been upgraded simultaneously; both were promoted to Co-founder and Co-President, and entered the board of directors as executive directors.

Jiang Qingsong continues to coordinate the company's operational system, while Yao Maoqing still helms the core embodied intelligence business line.

Beyond the above, there is one very eye-catching change in this list, which is:

Former Partner, Senior Vice President, and Chief Scientist Dr. Luo Jianlan has disappeared from the list.

Rumors of Dr. Luo Jianlan's departure subsequently spread online, but some media reports stated that Zhiyuan responded he has not yet left and it is an internal position adjustment. However, the official website has not disclosed his specific position or work responsibilities after the adjustment.

If this is true, the response is quite interesting; the four words "has not yet left" both deny the resignation rumors and leave plenty of room for imagination.

In this personnel list change, everyone is most concerned about Dr. Luo Jianlan.

Why has his disappearance from the list attracted so much attention?

This matter goes back to a year ago.

One Year and Four Months

In April last year, Dr. Luo Jianlan officially announced his joining of the Zhiyuan Robotics team, taking the role of Chief Scientist and leading the establishment of the 'Zhiyuan Embodied Intelligence Research Center,' focusing on the full-stack R&D and industrial implementation of next-generation embodied intelligence systems.

In September of the same year, Luo Jianlan entered the partner team, with his position upgraded to Partner, Senior Vice President, and Chief Scientist.

Calculating this, Dr. Luo Jianlan spent at least one year and four months at Zhiyuan.

Mentioning Dr. Luo Jianlan, students interested in robotics R&D and embodied intelligence should not be unfamiliar.

Indeed, he is a core member of the team led by Sergey Levine, a prominent figure in embodied intelligence at UC Berkeley.

Born in 1993, Luo Jianlan completed his undergraduate degree at Wuhan University of Technology.

Driven by a passion for robotics, Luo Jianlan began participating in research projects under mentor Tian Zhewen from his sophomore year, publishing multiple core journal papers, and later won first prize in the American Mathematical Modeling Competition.

In 2015, he stood out among 1,500 global applicants and became the only Chinese student admitted that year to UC Berkeley's Robotics and Intelligent Machines Lab, receiving a full scholarship.

As is well known, in the field of embodied intelligence, including humanoid robots, UC Berkeley has always been a god-like presence.

Starting from a 211 undergraduate program and fiercely securing an offer from UC Berkeley's brutally competitive flagship program, Dr. Luo Jianlan's academic journey was legendary at the time, even being specially reported by the media.

After earning his Ph.D., Luo Jianlan stepped into the industry with academic sharpness, serving as a Research Scientist at Google X and Google DeepMind.

During this period, he participated in multiple cutting-edge robotics projects and collaborated with Professor Stefan Schaal, a titan in the field of robot learning, deeply studying the complete technology chain from underlying dynamics to upper-level control.

Until 2023, Dr. Luo Jianlan returned to Berkeley for postdoctoral research, mainly focusing on high sample efficiency, high-performance real-robot reinforcement learning and manipulation, as well as applications related to large models, becoming a core member of the embodied intelligence expert Sergey Levine's team.

Dr. Luo Jianlan led the development of the world's first superhuman real-robot reinforcement learning system, SERL/HIL-SERL, which completely overturned traditional robot training models and achieved a 100% task success rate for the first time. Widely applied globally, this breakthrough solved the pain point of reinforcement learning's long-term reliance on simulation environments.

Luo Jianlan once said: "Simulators cannot replicate the complexity of the real world; only by facing physical interaction data directly can true intelligent evolution be achieved."

Dr. Luo Jianlan's dual experience in academia and industry also shaped his unique research philosophy:

"Technology must coexist with scenarios; algorithms detached from practical application are just castles in the air."

I have previously read several media interviews with Dr. Luo Jianlan, and from his words, it is clear that he is a very pragmatic technical expert with clear goals and plans for his research direction.

Now, the disappearance of such a technical expert from Zhiyuan's partner list is not surprising to cause speculation.

What is even more intriguing is that Dr. Luo Jianlan's personal homepage and social media platforms only retain his identity as an Associate Professor at Shanghai Chuangzhi College, without mentioning any position or title information related to Zhiyuan.

So the specific situation remains unknown; we'll have to see if the expert discloses anything later.

Extremely High Concentration of Huawei Veterans

Looking back at this publicly disclosed 9-person core team list from Zhiyuan, a significant characteristic can be found:

Huawei veterans make up half the team.

First, Zhiyuan's founder, Board Chairman, and CEO 'Deng Taihua' previously worked at Huawei, responsible for multiple important product business lines such as Huawei's wireless product line and computing product line. As a Huawei executive, he worked there for over twenty years, possessing rich global market experience and team management experience.

Zhihuijun needs even less introduction, directly coming from Huawei's Genius Youth program and was an AI edge computing expert in Huawei's Ascend computing product line at the time.

Another example is 'Jiang Qingsong', who also had years of experience as a Huawei executive, formerly serving as President of Huawei's Global Enterprise Wireless Sales Department.

New partner 'Zhang Xiuzheng' formerly served as Vice President of Huawei and President of Huawei Cloud China.

'Niu Jia' previously served as HRD for Huawei's Cloud Computing and Big Data Platform.

Among these 9 partners, more than half came from Huawei, covering many core departments such as R&D, operations, marketing, and human resources.

Besides them, there is 'Yao Maoqing', formerly from Google Waymo, responsible for Zhiyuan's embodied business system; 'Wang Chuang', a member of the founding team of DJI's Livox LiDAR product line, responsible for Zhiyuan's general business department; and 'Zhu Jie', who previously worked at Tencent, responsible for Zhiyuan's public relations and branding.

So, this is no longer a team of a scientist playing with a group of geeks, but a fully-equipped commercial legion ready to fight a big battle at any time.

As a unicorn in the field of embodied intelligence, Zhiyuan Robotics has attracted much attention in the industry over the past two years.

The humanoid robot track is currently transitioning from the technological breakthrough phase to the large-scale implementation phase. Whoever can first make the leap from laboratory samples to real-world scenarios will stand out in this track.

As Dr. Luo Jianlan said in a previous interview:

"With the improvement of intelligence, we have entered the application window period for robots. Although those ideal, all-purpose robots may take longer to arrive, robots with practical value in specific scenarios and continuous learning capabilities will arrive earlier."
