Tencent's WorkBuddy Puts an AI Coworker Directly on Your Desktop
Desktop AI that actually operates local files removes the friction of uploading sensitive documents to cloud chatbots. For developers outside China, WorkBuddy illustrates how a major tech company is packaging agentic desktop automation for non-technical office workers, with a model lineup that sidesteps Western API gatekeepers entirely.
WorkBuddy is a desktop AI assistant from Tencent that runs locally on a PC and directly manipulates files. It opens applications, reads spreadsheets, extracts images from PDFs, and places a finished file on the desktop — behaving less like a chatbot and more like a coworker sitting at the next machine. The tool ships with domestic large models (Tencent Hunyuan, DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi, MiniMax) pre-integrated, so no VPN, overseas subscription, or credit card is required.
The core difference from phone-based or web-based AI is execution: instead of returning text to copy-paste, WorkBuddy produces a revised Word document, a completed PowerPoint deck, or a summarized Excel sheet. It has direct access to local folders and files, eliminating the upload-download loop common with browser-based assistants.
A planned 100-part tutorial series will walk absolute beginners from installation through automating real office tasks — document processing, file organization, meeting minutes, investment research, and video creation — eventually assembling reusable workflows and AI teams.
WorkBuddy competes in the same category as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex but removes the two biggest adoption barriers in China: the need for a VPN and an international payment method.
By pre-integrating multiple domestic models and letting users switch among them, Tencent positions the tool as a model-agnostic desktop agent rather than a single-model product, which could pressure Western tools that lock users into one provider.
The tutorial series treats AI desktop assistants as a literacy problem — the obstacle is not technical capability but onboarding — mirroring how smartphones eventually reached non-technical users through step-by-step guidance rather than feature lists.
