OpenAI Drops the 5-Hour Cap on Codex, and Anthropic Flinches Again
When usage caps evaporate and model access windows keep stretching, the cost of AI-assisted development drops to near-zero for subscribers. Every extension and limit removal is a pricing signal that the frontier-model war is being fought on accessibility, not just benchmark scores.
ChatGPT's paid tiers no longer enforce a 5-hour rolling limit. Product lead Tibo announced the change on July 13, 2026, and users immediately saw the restriction disappear from Codex. Only the weekly quota remains, which effectively uncaps heavy coding sessions. OpenAI also disclosed that ChatGPT has hit 6 million active users, a number Tibo attributes in part to Codex adoption.
Anthropic reacted fast. Within one hour of OpenAI's post, Claude extended Fable 5 availability again — the third extension since GPT 5.6 Sol launched. Sol's release last week pulled users away from Claude, and its lower price made the switch easy for consumers who, as Musk put it, don't need a Fable 5-class model.
Google's absence from this fight is becoming conspicuous. Gemini 3.5 Pro was reportedly ready to ship but got shelved because launching into a market dominated by Sol and Fable 5 would relegate it to a footnote. The company that invented the Transformer and owns TPUs and the world's largest data troves is now watching from the sidelines while xAI, OpenAI, and Anthropic trade blows.
Anthropic's repeated Fable 5 extensions look less like generosity and more like a retention tactic against a cheaper, more accessible rival.
