GPT-5.6 Ships Three Models, Slashes Prices, and Absorbs Codex Into ChatGPT

Hello everyone, I'm Kakarot.

Today, in the early hours Beijing time, ChatGPT 5.6 was finally released.

As previously rumored, this update released three models.

Prices Slashed, Chasing Claude Down

It scared Anthropic so much they immediately reset Claude Code's quota. 🤣

Why was Anthropic so quick to reset quotas?

Because GPT-5.6's pricing is directly aimed at undercutting Claude's models.

From the above, you can see that the price of the GPT 5.6 Sol model is half that of Claude Fable 5 Extra High, and one-third of Fable 5 Max. Very brutal.

The chart below compares the comprehensive intelligence capabilities of each model. Claude's Fable 5 is still the strongest.

In terms of coding ability, GPT-5.6 Sol is undoubtedly the strongest.

The good news is that, except for the Go plan, all three models are available to paying users this time.

Meaning if you are a Plus or Pro tier member, you can experience all three models.

Codex Has Been 'Possessed' by ChatGPT

After opening Codex, you will find that Codex's software interface has also undergone its biggest overhaul ever.

After installation, opening Codex, you will see a welcome page like this.

Wow, Codex has become a ChatGPT application.

Codex's app name has changed to ChatGPT!

Codex has been possessed! 😂

But this time it's not just about changing the icon and name.

For example, Codex has also added in-app Markdown and code editing, direct modification of selected content, sidebar GitHub PR review, multi-repo projects, faster Computer Use, and accessing desktop Codex projects from the ChatGPT mobile app.

I suspect it's because Codex has far more users than ChatGPT. The official team simply decided to integrate Codex with ChatGPT.

Since I'm using a Mac, I'm not sure if it's the same on Windows.

If you don't check 'Keep Codex app icon' here,

you will find the Codex icon changes to the ChatGPT icon 😁.

ChatGPT and Codex Officially Merge

After entering the page, you will find the UI has also changed.

In the top left corner, ChatGPT and Codex are integrated together. Codex is displayed by default, and the prompt text in the middle is also related to Codex.

You can also switch to [Work Mode] here.

After switching, the page looks like this, and the prompt information in the middle is more suitable for work scenarios.

Let's switch back to Codex mode.

How to Choose Among the Three New Models?

Three new models have been added here: 5.6 Sol, 5.6 Terra, 5.6 Luna.

Still refer to this chart.

The strongest coding model is definitely Sol. It can be used for very complex tasks, such as reasoning, planning, and executing long tasks.

For actual work, you can choose Terra or Luna mode, which offer great value for money.

How Many Times Can Plus Users Use It?

I found a new [Reasoning Intensity] option here.

Higher reasoning intensity definitely means higher quota consumption.

If reasoning intensity is set to extreme and speed to 1.5x, I wonder how many questions Plus can ask? 🤔

The official website has already given a rough range.

Model Local messages Plus users can send every 5 hours
GPT-5.6 Sol 15~90 messages
GPT-5.6 Terra 20~110 messages
GPT-5.6 Luna 50~280 messages

But this number is not fixed; task complexity, context, reasoning intensity, and tool calls will all affect consumption.

Like me, setting reasoning intensity to extreme and speed to 1.5x will definitely burn through the quota faster, and there might also be weekly limits stacking on top. For details, see the official quota explanation.

Sites: Write a Website, Deploy It Directly Online

Without testing the model's specific capabilities first, I think a big highlight of this update is the Sites feature.

You can enter from [Sites] in the top left corner here.

This feature can be understood as: Codex's built-in [AI Website Building + Hosting and Publishing] function.

It's not just about generating a piece of HTML, but letting AI help you:

Write website → Preview → Modify → Deploy → Generate accessible link → Manage access permissions.

The official documentation says: Sites allows ChatGPT to create, host, iterate, and share websites, Web Apps, and mini-games, suitable for turning a prompt or an existing project directly into an accessible online experience.

For more introduction, you can see here: https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/sites?surface=app

For example, you can have it generate an independent personal page, then deploy it directly online, and you will get a URL that can be opened directly in a browser.

Here I directly asked Codex to help me deploy an existing project.

Here I deployed a project I made previously.

Of course, this is just a prototype and will continue to be improved later. 🤔 Welcome everyone to give me some suggestions.

The UI of this page was replicated by Codex from the Xiaomi MIMO Code official website 😂. Regarding this, I wrote an article before, interested friends can go look it up.

The Sites feature essentially takes over the functionality of 'AI + Hosting and Publishing' platforms like V0.

This feature is very suitable for product managers: they can very conveniently tell programmers in Codex what a page should look like, then deploy it directly and provide a link, without having to send HTML files offline, ummm.

Platforms like v0.dev and bolt.new that rely on AI for website building and hosting probably have no room to survive now.

When a big player enters the field, small players go bankrupt directly.

I have to say, ChatGPT's capabilities are really strong. With this wave of updates, Anthropic probably can't hold on.

I will do an in-depth evaluation of the GPT 5.6 model's capability boundaries later.
