Two Coders Just Made China's Hurun Rich List — Here's How
They Made the Hurun Rich List Just by Writing Code!
Can you really achieve financial freedom just by writing code?
This is a question many programmers might ponder after a few years on the job. As we tap away day after day, implementing one project requirement and solving one tough problem after another, it's natural to wonder: can this path of code ultimately lead to the door of financial freedom?
To sort this out, we first need to look at our industry, and even around us, to see if there are any programmers who have already walked this path. What paths can we see from them? What lessons can we learn?
As many of you know, last summer, the news of Alibaba's first-generation programmer Cai Jingxian (known by his nickname "Duolong") retiring from Alibaba caused quite a stir in the tech circle.
As Taobao's first programmer, Duolong is indeed a legendary figure in Alibaba's technological development history.
In Alibaba's early days, Duolong was involved in the development of almost all core systems.
From Taobao's search engine to its transaction system, from databases to the underlying architecture, his code permeated Alibaba's technical system like capillaries. He is most famously known for being able to solve technical problems that left others stumped in an extremely short time, leading to many legends about Duolong circulating within Alibaba.
Thanks to his outstanding technical contributions, Duolong officially became a partner at Alibaba in 2014.
In 2017, at the age of 41, Duolong made the Hurun Rich List with a personal wealth of 2.6 billion yuan, truly achieving financial freedom by writing code. This also made him a legend of wealth in the programmer community.
Besides Duolong, there's another big shot in China who also came from a coding background and made it onto the wealth list through technology. Some of you might have guessed it.
That's right, it's Dr. Lou Tiancheng.
Compared to Cai Jingxian's model of deep cultivation within a large platform, Lou Tiancheng represents another path to success: tech entrepreneurship.
Lou Tiancheng is a globally renowned computer programming master, known in the community as "Master Lou" and hailed as "China's top college computer programmer."
In high school, Lou Tiancheng's outstanding performance in computer science competitions earned him a direct admission to Tsinghua University's Computer Science department. He later joined the prestigious Yao Class at Tsinghua, becoming one of its first students.
Lou Tiancheng was widely known in the competitive programming world by his handle "ACRush." He was the TopCoder China champion for 11 consecutive years and won the Google Code Jam championship twice.
After graduating from university, Lou Tiancheng began his career at Google, working on social networking and machine learning research at Google's headquarters.
In 2016, Lou Tiancheng was invited to join Baidu's US R&D Center. During this time, he focused on autonomous driving technology and, thanks to his exceptional technical skills, became the youngest T10 engineer in Baidu's history.
After working at Baidu for a while, Lou Tiancheng left the company and, together with Baidu's former Chief Architect Peng Jun, founded the autonomous driving company Pony.ai. Lou Tiancheng serves as the company's co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, overseeing the group's overall R&D, products, and technology management.
Through technological innovation and business insight, Lou Tiancheng led Pony.ai to become a unicorn in the autonomous driving field, valued at tens of billions of dollars.
As one of the founders, Lou Tiancheng's personal wealth naturally skyrocketed with the company's valuation, also reaching the hundreds of millions level.
In 2024, Lou Tiancheng made the "2024 Hurun Rich List" at rank 875 with a personal wealth of 6 billion yuan, achieving the feat of making the Hurun Wealth List by writing code.
Looking back, we can see that although both Cai Jingxian and Lou Tiancheng amassed enormous wealth through code and technology, their paths were completely different.
Cai Jingxian represents the "deep cultivation in a large platform" type.
He achieved excellence in a specific domain, becoming an indispensable part of the system architecture. He focused on technology at Alibaba for decades, ultimately reaping huge financial rewards.
Lou Tiancheng, on the other hand, represents the "tech entrepreneurship" type.
He transformed his technical skills into commercial products, founded a company, attracted investment, and ultimately achieved rapid growth in both business value and personal wealth.
From the experiences of these big shots, it's not hard to see that the key to financial freedom doesn't simply come from the act of "writing code" itself, but from the value that code can create, the problems it solves, and the scalable value system it ultimately forms.
Although their paths to success differed, the foundation behind their success is the same: a pure love for and persistent pursuit of technology.
Cai Jingxian once said, "My ideal state is to write code for 8 hours a day." Even after becoming a partner, he maintained the role of a full-stack engineer, understanding both the underlying kernel and the business layer, and he still insisted on writing code.
Lou Tiancheng is the same, maintaining his passion for programming and technological innovation from his student days to his entrepreneurial journey.
Their success also confirms one thing: technical strength itself can indeed create immense value. In this technology-driven era, coding ability remains a significant lever for changing one's destiny.
But is technical skill alone enough?
Looking at the experiences of Cai Jingxian and Lou Tiancheng, it seems there's more to it.
Technical strength is certainly important, but timing and opportunity are equally crucial!
From the PC internet era, to the mobile internet era, and now to the AI era, these two tech masters were among the earliest entrants in their respective phases. They chose the right industry, the right platform, and without exception, they caught the wave of their era's dividends.
When technology meets a tailwind, ordinary programmers have a real chance to achieve a leap in wealth.
Including many who experienced the explosive upward cycle of the internet industry, people often mistakenly attribute the era's dividends to their own abilities, not realizing that it was the generous reward given by the times.
To this day, I still believe that code is one of the most powerful creative tools of this era.
But at the same time, we need to be clear-headed:
Programmers who achieve financial freedom are, after all, a minority. It requires a combination of "technical ability + business acumen + timing + a bit of luck."
A person's success certainly depends on their own efforts, but one must also consider the course of history.
So, while focusing on the present, don't forget to look to the long term. Keep your feet on the ground, but never forget to look up at the stars.
